Creating Categories

Since the beginning of the Age of Discovery, numerous efforts have been dedicated to comprehending the distinctions among human beings. Categories are created, and positivist reasoning is brought into play to assert inherent definitive differences. Travelogues, scientific accounts, historical documents, analyses, definitions, and supporting evidence have been infused with subjective human perspectives, continually refracted through subsequent interpretations. Creating Categories seeks to present the fragments in the history of science that delineate these human categories, in order to narrate the story of our persistent endeavor to fathom the world and the constraints that accompany this pursuit.

地理大發現以來，為了理解世界各地形形色色的人，科學家畫分出類別，並嘗試以實證科學，證成帶有本質主義預設的內在差異。然而，一次又一次的田野調查、描述、記錄、分析、定義、差異證成，其中總有些偏誤折射後的想像，總有佚失在詮釋過程中的碎片。透過歷史文獻的爬梳，我試圖呈現對於「人」的分類與描述，以破碎的地圖、圖像、表格、引述自文獻的語句，編織書寫敘事——關於認識世界的嘗試與限制。
